William and Kate hail Team GB for ‘doing nation proud’ at Tokyo Olympics

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge praised Team GB for their ‘strength, passion and determination’

Prince William and Kate Middleton have hailed Team GB for ‘doing the nation proud’ in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, both 39, paid tribute to Britain’s Olympians for their ‘strength, passion and determination’ in ‘challenging circumstances’.

Posting on their official social media channels, the future king and queen shared pictures of Team GB athletes including divers Tom Daley and Matty Lee and swimmer Adam Peaty with their gold medals.

The games officially came to a close today as Team GB took home an impressive 65 medals – the same as they did at the London 2012 games – including 22 gold.

William and Kate posted: ‘What an amazing #Tokyo2020 Olympic Games, @TeamGB – you’ve all shown such strength, passion and determination in challenging circumstances and have done the nation incredibly proud!’

The couple also praised charity SportsAid for helping aspiring athletes realise their dream of competing at the Olympics.

They tweeted: ‘SportsAid plays a vital role in helping young athletes overcome the financial obstacles they face in their bid to become the next generation of Olympians, Paralympians and world champions.

‘It’s fantastic to see so many athletes participating and standing on the podium that received support from @TeamSportsAid at some stage of their careers.’

SportsAid revealed in July how 61% of Team GB athletes at the Tokyo Olympic Games have received financial support and recognition from the charity during their careers – equating to 242 of 398 members including reserves.

The Duchess of Cambridge became a patron of the charity in 2013 and has met dozens of young people who have received assistance.

Sports-mad William and Kate, who enjoyed watching the Euro 2020 and Wimbledon tournaments this year, did not fly to Tokyo for the Olympic Games – marking the second time in a row they were unable to attend.

They also decided not to go to the games in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, in 2016, amid concerns over the Zika virus.
