A tanning salon worker sacked because she used to have skin cancer has successfully sued her boss.

Sofi Lorimer quit her twice a week sunbed habit after having 15 operations to remove tumours when diagnosed with malignant melanoma in 2015, an employment tribunal heard.

And when she started work at Smart Tan UK in March 2020, she claimed it ‘wasn’t in my job description to have to go into the sunbeds’.

But four months later, when one of the beds developed a fault, boss Aslam Mohammed told her to get inside the machine to fix it while it was switched on.

The 36-year-old told him about her past diagnosis and was sacked three days later on ‘health and safety’ grounds.

A tribunal heard Mr Mohammed told her: ‘I don’t feel you should work here anymore as you had cancer. I don’t feel it is appropriate.’

But judges ruled the salon owner discriminated against the mum-of-two due to her disability and ordered him to pay her £9,300 compensation.

Speaking after ruling, she said: ‘The anxiety he caused me was horrible.

‘He brought back all the pain and fear of being ill.’

Ms Lorimer, of Birtley, Tyne and Wear, added: ‘Some people think I’m mental for working in a sun bed shop but I enjoyed it.

‘I didn’t have to tell him my personal circumstances, but thought he would say, “No problem”, as a normal manager would. He thought he was untouchable.

‘I just wanted him to understand he had been cruel and that you can’t treat people like that.’

She claims the ‘stress’ of the case led to her developing fibromyalgia, a disorder that causes widespread pain.
