President Joe Biden is set to announce an ambitious achievement in his administration’s fight against Covid-19 – that he has deliver more than 100million vaccine doses abroad.
The massive donation makes the US the No. 1 donor of vaccines, having sent more than all other countries combined.
Biden aimed to have America lead the way in preventing the spread of the disease, which meant donating vaccines to less fortunate countries, NBC News reported. The news comes shortly after the US reached Biden’s goal of having 70% of American adults with at least one Covid-19, a target he hoped but fail to reach on July Fourth.
‘Today’s announcement is a fulfillment of his promise and a significant down payment on hundreds of millions of more doses that the U.S. will deliver in the coming weeks,’ the White House said ahead of Biden’s remarks.
In total, the US has shipped more than 110million doses of vaccines to more than 60 countries, which the White House is calling ‘a major milestone that cements the United States as the global leader in Covid-19 vaccine donations’.
Biden was set to deliver remarks on the effort on Tuesday afternoon.
The president previously set a goals to send 80million doses of US-approved shots, NBC News reported, including 60million doses of the AstraZeneca jab.
By the end of August, the Biden administration hopes to ship out half a billion Pfizer doses to 100 low-income countries.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has stated that more than 181million Americans who are adults have receive at least one shot of a Covid-19 vaccine.
