Brits can hope for more summery weather later this month – though not before heavy rain and wind hits this week.
A yellow weather warning for thunderstorms has been put out by the Met Office for Monday in parts of the south of England and Wales, with people told to prepare for possible flooding, lightning and hail.
Some forecasters are predicting another heatwave towards the middle or end of August, with temperatures possibly even hitting the 30°C mark.
But people in southern parts of the UK will have to put their plans on ice and settle for downpours on Monday.
Showers – some of them thundery – are expected over southeast Wales, the south Midlands and southern England, but many will see sunny spells.
Northern Ireland is expected to be cloudier with showery rain, mainly in the west, before most of the country sees a clear night.
One flood alert is in place for Ryde on the Isle of Wight, after intense rain caused water levels to rise in the Monktonmead Brook.
Tuesday is expected to bring sunny spells for most areas but scattered showers are forecast – mainly in the northwest and over southern and central England – in the afternoon.
From Wednesday and towards the end of the week most areas can expect longer spells of rain – potentially heavy, thundery and even accompanied by hail and mainly light winds.
But temperatures will be pleasant enough and around normal for early August.
There is then expected to be an unsettled period for the week after, with some torrential downpours, thunderstorms and high winds expected.
But forecasters predict it will be a changeable mixture of sunny spells and showers, before the possible heatwave.
It is very difficult to predict weather weeks in advance but some long-term forecasts in recent days have predicted an ‘African plume’ will bring a heatwave to the UK in two or three weeks.
The return of the summer warmth comes after a period of unsettled, though relatively warmth weather – accompanied by heavy rain which even caused flash flooding.
Ex-BBC and Met Office forecaster John Hammond of weathertrending told MailOnline: ‘People are wondering whether autumn has arrived early – but summer isn’t over.
‘There is optimism for warm periods from August 16, with heat in the mid 80sF [around 30°C] certainly possible before summer ends.’
The Met Office forecast for two weeks’ time predicts: ‘Whilst there are current signals of a drier and warmer than average period from the middle of August, occasional spells of more unsettled weather, primarily in the northwest, remains possible.
‘Accompanying this is a low risk of short-lived thundery spells, these mainly in southeastern parts.
‘Confidence through this period remains low at present. However, most should see dry and fine weather. Above average temperatures continue to be indicated through the remainder of August, with possibly even very warm conditions at times in southern areas.’
