A couple were dragged along a Scottish road when they tried to stop a man from stealing their car – which was later found torched.

The pair were sitting in their blue Mazda 2 when a man walking down the street vandalising cars, hit their vehicle.

When the couple challenged the man over what he had done, he forced his way into the Mazda and drove off.

The victims tried to stop him and were briefly dragged along the street sustaining minor injuries.

The incident happened at around 6.25pm on Wednesday, in Low Glencairn Street, Kilmarnock.

Half-an-hour after the robbery, the Mazda was found on fire in Tarryholm Drive, Irvine.

Now, detectives have launched an investigation and are appealing for anyone with information to come forward.

The suspect is described as white, aged between 20 and 30 with a slim but muscular build and short hair.

He was wearing a blue jumper at the time of the incident and it is believed he had previously been in the company of a woman in her 20s of a larger build.

Detective Inspector Andrea Templeton, from Kilmarnock CID, said: ‘Fortunately neither of the victims were seriously injured, but this was still a very frightening ordeal for them and it was made all the more distressing because of the theft of their vehicle.

‘We are pursuing a number of lines of inquiry to identify the suspect and would ask anyone who recognises him, or who witnessed this incident, to contact police immediately.

‘Similarly, if your vehicle was in Lower Glencairn Street, Kilmarnock, or Taryholm Drive, Irvine during the evening of Wednesday, 4 January and has dash-cam footage that may be able to assist with our investigation, then please also get in touch.’

Those with information can contact Kilmarnock CID via 101 and quote incident number 2396 of 5 January 2022.

Alternatively, an anonymous report can be made to the charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
