Angry residents who formed a blockade using wheelie bins in protest against school run chaos say they’re ready to do it all over again.

Residents of Halton Place, in the Lincolnshire town of Cleethorpes, blocked off the road at the end of the summer term before police were called to break it up.

They’d had enough of parents using an emergency gateway to get their children to and from school.

Locals say the gate was only opened to parents as an alternative entrance to Cleethorpes Academy as a social distancing measure at the height of the pandemic.

But now they claim it is being adopted as a permanent measure and say they’ve had enough of being blocked off by mums and dads on the school run.

They’re prepared for further chaos as the autumn term begins next month and are considering bringing the wheelie bins back out.

Pam Ireland told Grimsby Live: ‘We are still in the same position as we were at the end of the summer term. We have been let down and now it seems we are having our noses rubbed in it.

‘We have nurses, doctors, delivery vehicles and residents’ cars all trying to use that road. But parents park where they like and block the driveways so no one can get out.

‘How would anyone feel if their elderly parent was blocked in? Don’t pensioners have the right to drive to and from their homes? People in their 80s are just as entitled to drive as anyone else

A neighbour said: ‘I expect the wheelie bins will be out again soon. No one is in a mood to back down. Some are planning when to get the bins out.’

Residents say they are concerned for pupils safety as they walk straight out into the road in the way of cars.

Before the end of term, a meeting was held by North East Lincolnshire Council portfolio holder for children’s services, Councillor Ian Lindley, along with residents, police, and Cleethorpes Academy.

In a statement afterwards, Cleethorpes Academy said: ‘A lengthy stakeholder meeting took place at Cleethorpes Academy where interesting and detailed discussions took place.

‘A skeleton plan for a way forward was agreed and a future meeting will take place in due course. Both sides are looking forward to working together in the future.’
